音楽：フィラデルフィアの週末 /タワーオブパワーとアベレッジホワイトバンド

今日はフィラデルフィア郊外のGlensideという小さな洒落た町にある、Keswick TheatreでTower of Power と Average White Band のライブを楽しみました。

Glensideはプリンストンからは車で１時間ほどの距離にあたります。

Keswick Theatreは、Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Manhattan Transfer, Joe Sample, Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwickなどが頻繁に出演している名ホールです。


Glensideの町はこのシアターが中心になっていて、周囲のレストランはここでコンサートを見る人がライブ前に食事をする場になっていて、各国料理が揃っています。今日はギリシャ料理に行きました。



この２バンドのフルスペックのライブを続けて楽しめて$38。安いです。
１バンドのライブだけも5000円はする価値のあるライブでした。


まずは午後８時かAverage White Bandのライブ。
Pick Up the Pieces で始まりPick Up the Pieces で終わったライブは１時間くらいのステージで、その間にCut the Cake, Queen of My Soul, Let's Go Round Againなどのヒット曲が並びます。ドラマーのリズムの切れが悪いのが気になりましたが（グルーヴ音楽なのに！！）、フロントのメンバーが担当楽器を変 えながら、往年のヒット曲を歌い、演奏する様は味わい深いものがありました。

続いて午後９時過ぎからTower of Powerのステージ。ここ４年くらい毎年ライブに行っていますが、選曲も少し変わり、オリジナルのギタリストBruce Conte がバンドに再参加したこともあって、今までにも増して良い演奏でした。

曲の良さに加え、ダイナミックレンジの広さと、音の切れの良さ、それからエンターテインメント性の全てがマル。

「バンドのライブ」に必要な要素が全て入っているステージでした。

今年の夏にこのメンバーでのライブのDVDが出るとのこと。これも楽しみです。

Tower of Powerは数少ない「レコードよりもライブの方が良い音のしているバンド」です。是非ご一聴をお勧めします。

どちらのバンドも６０年代後半に結成された７０年代の代表的にファンクバンドです。
メンバーはそれなりに高齢になっていますが、ミュージシャン、とりわけ管楽器奏者は本当に若いですね！
管楽器健康法、。。。良いかもしれません。

社会：デイライトセービングタイム

この夕焼けは日本の朝焼けに繋がっている？？

高緯度、子午線との位置関係、それに何といってもデイライトセービングタイム。この３つが揃って就業時間後の明るい時間もだいぶ増えてきました。

プリンストン、ライブラリー通り午後８時頃。これなら、飛び出して来る鹿も見えます。

最近は自己研鑽でジム通いの日と楽器の練習の日をサンドイッチにして終業後の２時間ほどを過ごしています。

Gold's Gymでひと泳ぎ＆筋トレをすべて済ませて午後８時ちょっと前。これから日没です。

ビジネス：ビジネス英語は最初の数語で決まる

アメリカで英語を話す際、相手が話している最中でも必要なタイミングで割り込むのは失礼にはあたりません。

いつ割り込まれても言いたいことの要点はすでに言っているという状態でいることは大切ですし、割り込む際に何を言っているのかがすぐに理解されないと、折角割り込んでも無視されてしまいます。

このためにどうしたら良いか。ーー通じる話の切り出し方、通じる話始め方を習得することが肝要です。

つまり、アメリカ人が頻繁に使っている切り出し表現をいかに効果的に使うかということになります。

「何を言い始めたのだろう、この日本人？？」という相手の顔が少しでも減るよう、日々努力です。

以下、アメリカのオフィスで実際に聞いたビジネス英語表現をご紹介します。

社会：アリゾナで徒然なるままに

アリゾナのフェニックスへ行きました。
荒野と岩山の中に水を撒いて人が暮らしています。気温は華氏８４度。湿気は限りなくゼロです。

ここは全米で今もっとも人口が急増している都市のひとつ。街の構造が人口の増加に追いついていないのか、日中だろうが、早朝だろうが大変な渋滞でした。

洪水で悩むニュージャージーと好対照にフェニックスの悩みは砂漠の砂嵐。洗車屋は大繁盛でした。

ニューアークの空港から飛行機で５時間。東京から飛んだらハワイに着いてしまうような距離まで飛んでも同じ言葉、同じ通貨が通じます。

物資も全米ほぼ一緒。違うのは運送費が高いミネラルウォーターのブランドくらいでしょうか。

この広い国土のすみずみまで（砂漠の中まで！）、よくものを運ぶものだな、とアメリカのインフラにあらためて関心してしまいました。

アリゾナで食べる鮨は表面が乾いていたけれど、ネタはいけてました。日本人スタッフなど一人もいないアリゾナの砂漠の中で生（風）マグロの赤身が食べられるという物流の進歩。サボテンとアロエの鮨の方が雰囲気があると思いますが。。。

社会：ノーイースター

バージニアテック大学の事件に隠れてしまっていますが、ニュージャージーはノーイースターと呼ばれる嵐でそこいら中が洪水で大変なことになっています。
プリンストン付近の幹線道路は１昼夜冠水してストップ。
ニュージャージーの町のいくつかは今も水底です。
知人の中でも地下室が洪水で埋まってしまった方が２件。
本当に大変そうです。

大都市圏を襲った今回の嵐は、アメリカ人が環境・気候の問題を真剣に考え始めるきっかけをまた一つ作ったようです。

食：スーパーの食品チャレンジ

大和魂120％に日系スーパーで全て買い物をするのも良いですが、やはり土地にできるだけ馴染みたいものです。


アメリカのスーパーには日本に売っていないものが沢山あります。口にしたことのないものにいろいろと挑戦してみてます。

今週のチャレンジは以下の通り。

↓これはニシンのサワークリーム漬けの瓶詰め。とっても生臭いです。
お酒が進みます。西洋の小鯛の笹漬け風でもあります。






















↓ユダヤ人のコーシャーの基準を満たした、セブンイレブンの牛乳。パスオーバーの日には必要な記載ですが、基本的には普通の牛乳でした。



















↓９個で＄２．９９のSTOP&SHOPのクラムケーキ。とっても安くてボリュームたっぷり。ちょっと口に合わなかったですが、だし醤油をかけたらいけました。

NY NJの生のジャズを聴けるラジオ

ニューアークのラジオ局、　JAZZ 88: 88.3 FM WBGO は２４時間ジャズとその周辺の音楽を専門に流しています。中にはニュージャージーやニューヨークのライブハウスからの中継もあり、家で流しっぱなしにするには最高です。

このラジオ局のウェブサイトではiTunes対応のストリーミング放送をやっているので、日本でもインターネット＋パソコンで本場のジャズをずっと聴くことができます。

お花見 in Washington D.C.

春ですね。桜の季節です。今週末は、Washington D.C.の満開の桜を楽しみました。

ソメイヨシノ、やまざくら、しだれ桜、コブシなどなどが、不思議と同時に満開で、米国の首都で「日本の春」を１２０％楽しみました。
１番の違いは、花見の酒宴がないこと。
万国からの花見客が、「だんごより花」と“しらふ”で桜を鑑賞するのが、DC風です。

結局、僕らはみんな動物だ！

プリンストンにも春、いや、夏がきました。気温は華氏８０度くらいに一気にあがり、小さなプリンストンの中心街、運河沿いのトレイルなどに人がワンサカ出て来ていました。
自分も仕事の後、帰路でその人の出を見て、出かけたくなり、運河沿いのトレイルへ。アレキサンダー通りあたりから、ワシントン通りあたりまでを歩きました。

気温が上がるとアメリカらしくカラッとしていて気持ちがウキウキしてきます。結局、僕らはみんな気候に敏感な動物なんだなと実感。トレイルでは鹿３頭、カナディアングース多数、リス多数、魚などなどいろいろと人間以外にも出会いました。
先々週末は雪に見舞われましたが、冬もいよいよ終わりでしょう。（下の写真は先週の様子）

木々はいまだに枝ばかりですが、小さな芽吹きをトレイルでみました。
夏のような陽気の中、春の急速な訪れを感じた１日でした。

ビジネスに関するハウツー本や、財務・会計、マーケティング、戦略論、オペレーションなどに関する良書が数多く見られる中、仕事についての良書が非常に少ないことに気付きます。

ドラッカースクールで学んだ科目の中には、「仕事」について考えるものが多くありました。

物事を成し遂げるための要素、素晴らしい成果を挙げるための要素とは何か。またその背景にはどのような因果が隠されているのか。学問的真理の探究にして、すぐに明日からの仕事に活かせるディスカッションが数多く行われていました。

その中で自分の考えにピッタリと来たコンセプトがありました。それがホットグループです。

アーミッシュの村

ペンシルバニアにはアーミッシュの人々が住んでいます。彼らは近代文明を拒み、現在でも電灯や車を使わず（もしくは最小限に利用して）生活しています。

夕方のアーミッシュの農村は幻想的です。電灯はほとんどないので、夕方から真っ暗闇になります。

「何か闇の中から不思議な車両が近づいてくるな」と思いながらその車両とすれ違おうとすると、白い息を激しく吐きながら馬がバギー馬車を引いている姿が目に飛び込んできます。
これが、アーミッシュの人々の車です。一台でなく、あちらこちらに走っています。
馬車とすれ違うたびに、鍵をひねってペダルを踏めば走る自動車に乗っていることが何だか申し訳ないというか、恥ずかしい気持ちになります。

アーミッシュの家は、電灯が天井から点っているのではなく床の方から炎に照らされているので、柔らかく窓から光がこもれています。
スイッチ一つで昼間同様にコウコウと光をつけて、自律神経をおかしくしている現代生活が滑稽に思えてきました。

現代文明に疲れたら、ペンシルバニア・ランカスター地方へ。現代文明がなくとも、豊かに、文化的に生きている人々には元気をもらえるような気がします。

スーパーボウル サンデー

アメリカＮＦＬの最高峰、スーパーボウル。フットボールファンもそうでない人も関係なく、大画面テレビのある家に集まってＣＢＳの試合の中継を見ながら盛り上がります。

これはアメリカの年中行事の一つで、試合中は、町は閑散としています。

また、ＣＢＳ以外のテレビ局は視聴率が得られないのでいつもの日曜日のゴールデンタイム番組（デスパレート　ハウスワイヴス、アパレンティスなど）はお休みで、深夜のような低コスト番組に切り替わります。

こんな高視聴率の試合中継ですから、スポンサー企業もコマーシャルに力が入ります。昨日のコマーシャルも力作揃い。マーケティングの仕事に携わる者としてとても興味深く見ました。
ちなみに、1984年にアップルがマッキントッシュのコマーシャルを1度だけ流して、新たなパーソナルコンピュータの時代を告げたのもスーパーボウルでした。

スーパーボウルは音楽も素晴らしい。
フロリダらしい、ゲーム前のラテン音楽は、アシッドジャズ調の洒落たコードワークでＧＯＯＤ．

また、国旗斉唱はビリージョエル、ハーフタイムショーはプリンスとオールスターです。

年齢を重ねたビリージョエルと不思議なくらい老けないプリンス。どちらも驚きでした。

Crusaders at Blue Note

今日はCrusaders feat. Steve Gadd を聴きにW3rd st. のBlue Noteへ。DrumsはSteve Gadd, ギターはゴーストバスターズでおなじみのRay Parker Jr. でした。

Crusadersの曲の多くは自分にはメローすぎるのですが、このライブはプレーヤーと楽器編成が骨太で最高。Joe Sample のRhodes, W. felder のサックスに加え、Gaddのドラム、トロンボーン奏者が彩りを加えます。

Steve Gadd、Jeff Porcaro、村上ポンタ秀一氏の３人の演奏を自分の教材としてドラムの練習を10代の頃にやっていた自分にとって、間近でSteve Gaddの演奏を見られるのは感慨深いものがあります。

Steve Gadd は年齢もあってか、ソロは全くなく、ルーディメントを使ったフレーズも数回程度。会場規模もあってか、演奏の音量もmp以下のソフトタッチでした。フュー ジョン全盛期のソロ演奏ばかりが取り上げられますが、実はSteve Gadd の演奏の一番美味しいところは８ビートや１６ビートの基本リズムのグルーヴ。このグルーヴは健在でした。

終演後、Steve Gadd と握手をしましたが、その手の柔軟でエネルギッシュなこと！ピアニストの村山浩君も握手をすると同じような手をしていますが、ライブを終えた後のミュージシャンの手は生命力に溢れています。明日からの自分の仕事の糧にしようと思います。

マニア向けSomerville

昨日は我が家から１５マイルほど北に行った所にあるSomervilleを散歩しました。

秋葉原もびっくりの高級オーディオ店、鉄道模型専門店、スケートボード専門店、ピクニックのアイスボックスの中に入れて行くものの専門店、アナログレコード店などなど、勢揃い。さらに多くのアンティーク屋さんも軒を連ねます。
飲食店はアイルランド料理、インド料理、ポルトガル料理、和食兼インドネシア料理店（？？）、タイ料理、ユダヤ料理（コーシャー）、コスタリカ料理など多彩です。

この町で財布のひもを緩めたのは勿論、アナログレコード屋でした。

ここで見つけた掘り出し物。全部超特価。

Hubert Raws / Family: モンドグロッソがカバーしている曲の原曲です。Chick Corea, Ndugu Chancler などが参加しているなかなかいけてる一枚です。盤質良好でなんと９９セント。


高橋幸宏/Neuromantic：なんでここにこんなものがあるんだ！というわけで購入。３ドル９９セント。

The beatnics: なんでこんなものがここに・・・パート２。３ドル９９セント。

Maynard Ferguson/ Hot: ウルトラクイズのテーマとロッキーのテーマが入っています。こんな音を出す人のいるブラバンに入ってみたい。１ドル９９セント。

Together a New Chuck Mangione Concert : ２枚組ライブ。２ドル９９セント。

Mahavishnu Orchestra/ Birds of Fire: コレでもか！という演奏。３ドル９９セント。

George Benson/ Breezin':結構かっこいい。１ドル９９セント。

いいものの揃っている町でした。

NYCの嗜み

旅人NYとKMが東京より来訪。NYCを旅する機会が持てました。

NYCは近くて遠い存在。いつもPenn Station付近を歩いて、ささっと帰ってしまうのですが、今回は宿泊もして、じっくりとSOHO, Chinatown, Litte Italy,Halemを歩くことができました。
マンハッタンは本当に不思議な島です。香港とイタリアは徒歩１分、立派なアフリカンアメリカンのコミュニティーも電車で２０分、東武ワールドスクエアも、ディズニーランドも叶いません。




マンハッタン島のもつキャラクターは明らかにアメリカの例外で、ニュージャージー在住の身からすると、マンハッタンはアメリカではなく、ハドソン川から西がアメリカだという感覚さえ憶えます。下記リンクのポスターはニューヨーカーの世界観を上手に表しているとおもいます。

サ ンクスギビングを皮切りに、アメリカはホリデーシーズン。「ギビングの心」なるものが根底にあり、とにかくプレゼントを贈りあいます。

職場を中心に本当に多くの方から数多くいただき、自分からもプレゼントを送りました。

アメリカの消費経済はこうして活性化されているのだなと実感。さらに、ア マゾンをはじめ、ネットの商売がいかにこのホリデーシーズンの習わしを商機としているかも実感しました。アマゾン、本当に便利です。

今日はこのホリデーシーズンの重要な日の一つ、クリスマスですね。このクリスマス、アメリカではなかなか複雑です。
アメリカはキリスト教だけの国ではありません。特にニュージャージー、ニューヨークはユダヤ教の人が多く住んでいます。









近所、職場、友人にもユダヤ人が多数。
ニュージャージーのレイクウッド市の一地区ではラビの方々に多く出会います。

そんなわけで、この季節の挨拶をメリークリスマスで済ませるわけにはいきません。
メリークリスマスと言ったら、必ずハッピーハヌカを付け足す。そうでなければいっそのこと、ハッピーホリデーズといっておくのが無難です。特に日本人から見た場合、ユダヤの人が黒い服を着ていないとその方がどちらなのかはなかなかわかりません。


この季節にお店でプレゼントやギフトを買ってラッピングを頼むと、「クリスマス模様にしますか？それともハヌカ模様にしますか？？」と聞かれます。

この季節にツリーとキラキラ模様にしていたらキリスト教、ろうそくが奇麗に並んでいたらユダヤ教という識別もできます。

ちなみに、ユダヤの方からのカードは青・白・シルバーで、キリスト教の方からのカードは赤系でした。

ちなみに、今日のニューヨークタイムズには、親類に知られないようにこっそりとクリスマス飾りを楽しみ始めたユダヤ人の若夫婦の話が載っていました。
「宗教にこだわりずぎず、文化、慣習と捉えて楽しもう！」という姿勢で思い切ってクリスマス飾りを買ってみたら楽しかったという話で、一般的な日本人のクリスマスの楽しみ方に近い話と感じました。



ホ リデーの締めくくりはニューイヤーデーですね。日本人は元旦の昼から夜にかけてもお祝い、宴会をしますが、アメリカでは年越しの瞬間を祝う程度で、そのあ とはあっさりしています。カリフォルニアで新年会を開き、友人を招待したとき、日本人は１月１日の夜の欄に予定を書き込み、日本人以外は１２月３１日の夜 の欄に予定を書き込んでいました。

こんな文化ですから、ホリデー開け、１月２日から仕事スタートです。
